The Best Master's in Finance Programs in the U.S. for 2027
Key Points: Best Master's in Finance Programs
- New York University ranks #1 on a 100.0 Program Score.
- Only the top 25 programs make this list; every one is ranked on the same federal data, not on reputation.
- Scores weigh graduation rate most, then selectivity, cost and graduate earnings, from IPEDS, College Scorecard and BLS data. No school pays for a place (methodology).

The best master's in finance programs in the U.S. combine a low sticker price with a high graduation rate and real placement into analyst, portfolio management, and corporate finance roles, and this ranking scores 165 of them on exactly those factors using U.S. Department of Education IPEDS data. In-state tuition among the ranked programs spans $4,477 to $69,400, a gap of nearly $65,000 for what is often the same one-to-two-year credential. The cheapest strong-value option, University of Florida, charges $4,477 in-state and still posts a 91% graduation rate and the No. 4 overall score in this ranking.
Average graduation rate across the ranked finance programs is 88%, meaning most students who enroll finish, whether they choose a public flagship or a private research university. Cost does not track quality in a straight line here: several of the most expensive private schools, and several of the cheapest public ones, land in the top ten. What separates them is grad rate, selectivity, and how a school converts tuition dollars into a completed degree.
Read on for how this ranking was built, what a master of finance actually costs, where the CFA charter and accreditation fit in, and what BLS wage data says about the field these programs feed into.
Master's in Finance Programs, Compared by Score
Each program scores 0 to 100 on the Program Score, a composite of graduation rate, cost, selectivity, and outcomes. Longer bars rank higher.
Our Methodology for Ranking Master's in Finance Programs
Each school's Program Score blends graduation rate, admission selectivity, in-state tuition, and outcomes data pulled from the U.S. Department of Education's IPEDS system, weighted so that a program cannot buy a high rank with cost alone; a cheap program with a weak completion rate scores no better than an expensive one, and salary context comes from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program.
Every program earns a Program Score from 0 to 100, built only from federal data (IPEDS, the U.S. Department of Education, and BLS) and scored against its true peers: programs in the same field at the same degree level. No reputation surveys, no pay-to-play. Here is how the score is weighted:
- Outcomes44%
Graduation rate (26%) and real per-school graduate earnings (18%). Does the program get students to the finish line, and where do they land?
- Selectivity & academics38%
Admissions selectivity (24%) and the academic profile of admitted students (14%).
- Scale & value18%
Enrollment (7%), cost-to-earnings value (6%), and the number of graduates a program produces (5%).
Weights renormalize over the data each program actually reports, so a school missing a metric (many open-access colleges do not publish entrance scores or earnings) is never penalized for it. Scores are percentiles within the peer group, curved to a 0-to-100 scale. What the score does not measure: individual instructor quality, specific course content, or campus culture. Verify those directly with the program.

What Master's in Finance Programs Cost, and the Real ROI
Finance programs in this ranking span a nearly $65,000 tuition gap: $4,477 in-state at University of Florida versus $69,400 at Boston College, for what is functionally the same one-to-two-year master's credential. That gap matters more than any other number on this page, because it is the one variable a prospective student controls completely.
Run the math against the field's $88,870 national median salary for financial analysts. At University of Florida's $4,477 in-state rate, tuition equals roughly 5% of a single year's median salary, a debt load most graduates could clear from one paycheck. At Boston College's $69,400, tuition equals 78% of that same median salary, nearly nine and a half months of gross pay before rent, taxes, or interest. Both schools rank in the top ten of this list, which is the point: a high Program Score does not require a high price tag, and the schools that combine strong graduation rates with low in-state cost, Florida (91% grad rate, $4,477), Stony Brook (76%, $7,070), Texas A&M (84%, $9,092), deliver the clearest payback.
Private schools still dominate the top of the list: NYU, Columbia, Harvard, and Georgetown all charge more than $55,000 in-state and outrank Florida's price advantage with brand, network, and placement pull that a pure cost comparison cannot capture. The honest takeaway: decide first whether you need that network, then shop finance programs that clear your bar for graduation rate at the lowest price you can find.
The CFA Charter and Finance Licensure
Finance does not license practitioners the way accounting licenses CPAs or law licenses attorneys. The credential that carries weight in finance hiring is the CFA charter, administered by the CFA Institute, which requires passing three sequential exams, Levels I, II, and III, plus four years of qualified investment work experience. A master of finance degree does not substitute for the CFA exams, but several ranked finance programs align coursework with the CFA curriculum so students sit for Level I with material they have already covered in class.
Treat the CFA charter as a career-long credential, not a graduation requirement. Employers in asset management and equity research weight it heavily; corporate finance and banking roles weight it less. Ask any finance program you are considering whether its curriculum maps to the CFA Level I and II topic outlines, and whether the school covers or reimburses exam registration, since that alignment is a better predictor of a student's exam readiness than the school's overall ranking.
The Accreditation That Matters in Finance
The accreditation that matters most for finance programs is AACSB accreditation, held by a small share of business schools worldwide according to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB accreditation signals that a school's faculty, curriculum, and outcomes have been reviewed against a common standard, and it is the credential recruiters screen for when a school is not already a household name.
Regional institutional accreditation is the baseline; every school in this ranking holds it, and it is required for federal financial aid eligibility. AACSB accreditation is the layer on top that specifically vets the business or finance curriculum. Before enrolling, confirm current AACSB status directly on the accreditor's site rather than trusting a program page, since accreditation can lapse or be granted after a program's marketing material was last updated.
Degree Levels: Why This Ranking Focuses on the Master's
This ranking covers master's-level finance programs only, not bachelor's degrees or graduate certificates. An MSF degree, formally a Master of Science in Finance and often shortened to MSF, is built for two different students: the career-changer who needs a fast, quantitative credential to move into finance from another field, and the finance major who wants deeper technical training in valuation, derivatives, or fixed income before entering the job market.
A bachelor's in finance is the more common entry point into the field and costs less overall, but it will not deliver the technical depth, or the recruiting access, that a master of finance from a ranked program provides. A general MBA with a finance concentration is broader and slower, typically two years against roughly one for many MSF programs, and it costs more in tuition and lost salary. For a student set on investment banking, asset management, or quantitative finance specifically, the focused programs ranked here are the more direct and typically cheaper path than an MBA.
Online and Accelerated Master's in Finance Programs
None of the scraped program pages behind this ranking market themselves as online-only, but several ranked finance programs, including Northeastern and Boston University, offer hybrid or accelerated formats that compress the degree into 10 to 12 months for students who can study full time. An accelerated calendar suits a student who has already cleared the GMAT or GRE, has quantitative undergraduate coursework behind them, and wants to minimize the opportunity cost of time out of the workforce, since a shorter program means fewer months forfeiting the $88,870 median salary this degree is meant to unlock.
A part-time or extended-format track fits the opposite student: someone working full time who needs to keep earning while they study. That tradeoff is real and should be priced out before enrolling: a one-year full-time program at $69,400 costs more upfront but ends sooner, while a two-year part-time program at a public school like Texas A&M's $9,092 in-state rate costs far less in tuition but stretches the timeline, and the delayed raise, by twelve extra months.

Careers and Salary Outlook in Finance
The national median salary for financial analysts, the core occupation this degree feeds, is $88,870 per year, according to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook. That figure is a national field median, not a per-school outcome, and it is identical whether a graduate finishes a $4,477 program at Florida or a $69,400 program at Boston College; the school does not change the BLS number, only the graduate's odds of landing the job that pays it.
A master of finance from an accredited, well-ranked program improves those odds through recruiting pipelines, alumni networks, and coursework mapped to employer expectations, whether that is CFA-aligned curriculum for asset management or modeling-heavy coursework for corporate finance and banking. Graduates of the finance programs at the top of this list, NYU, Columbia, Harvard, are recruited directly into bulge-bracket banks and top-tier asset managers; graduates of strong public programs like Florida or Texas A&M compete for the same roles at a fraction of the tuition cost.
BLS projects continued demand for financial analysts as the profession absorbs more data and modeling work, but the Occupational Outlook Handbook figure is the ceiling reference point, not a guarantee tied to any single school. Use it to judge whether a program's price is justified, not as evidence that the degree itself pays $88,870 automatically.
